Chicken Heads 鸡头

January 19th, 2009 · 1 Comment

I’ve written about how black chickens (aka silkies) are good for you so I thought I’d actually make black chicken soup at home.
This is what a black chicken looks like defeathered…with the head and all.

I do a decent amount of cooking, but it’s the first time I’ve cleaned out the innards of a bird, much […]

Chinese New Year in Beijing – highlights and impressions versus Shanghai (lots of pictures)

February 12th, 2008 · 3 Comments

Happy Chinese New Year from Beijing!
It’s amazing to think that it’s already my second Chinese New Year in China, though instead of spending it in Shanghai, this year I spent it in Beijing.
The last (and only) time I was in Beijing, I didn’t have much of a chance to get my bearings since it was […]

Friend from Taiwan came to visit…and all we did was eat lots of snacks

January 15th, 2008 · 3 Comments

Before leaving on her trip to Shanghai from Taiwan my friend asks me, “anything you want me to bring from Taiwan?”
I couldn’t really think of anything worth toting over because you can pretty much get anything you want these days in Shanghai. So the only answer I could come up with was “how about some […]

Who said there’s no BBQing in China

April 8th, 2007 · 1 Comment

Spring is definitely here - the past few days have been long t-shirt or short sleeve weather during the day so a few of my friends and I decided to take a small trip out of shanghai and go BBQing. Yep, that’s right, BBQing in China. Who would’ve thunk it?
This place is called […]

Tomb Sweeping Day - Qing Ming Jie (清明节)and eating sweet green rice balls

April 8th, 2007 · 2 Comments

April 5th was Tomb Sweeping Day or Qing Ming Jie (清明节). It’s a lunar calendar ‘date’ that people traditionally go to visit their ancestors’ graves and clean off and weed the area and make offerings. It’s not a holiday or anything, but some people from my office took the day off to visit their […]

I must be getting more chinese

December 17th, 2006 · 3 Comments

I’ll definitely have sticker shock when I get back to the US. When I first got here, I thought any meal under 100 RMB was a bargain. Well, now my standard has taken a nosedive to a meal under 20 RMB is a bargain. Funny enough, I saw the exact same progression […]

Land of mini oranges

October 25th, 2006 · 3 Comments

Looks like a big bag of mandarin oranges, right?

Wrong! Mini-oranges…

They taste like normal mandarin oranges and pretty easy to peel, too. Not sure I’ll buy them again though – too much work for too small of a payoff.

Black chickens – great for you

October 21st, 2006 · No Comments

I wasn’t feeling so well last night and felt like having some soup. My friend took me to a restaurant to have some chicken soup, but not just any chicken soup – it was black chicken soup. I didn’t know such things existed, but check out the black skin and bones and purplish […]

IKEA – Mmm Mmm good

October 19th, 2006 · No Comments

So I’ve said previous that when I need a Chinese food reprieve, the place I go to is Ikea. Odd, I know, but here are some pics from it. A good non-iceberg lettuce salad is hard to find.
It looks remarkably the same and is translated in Chinese to 宜家. They stay […]

Why Chinese food is healthier….and observations related to food

October 10th, 2006 · 4 Comments

I know sometimes people have a hard time getting accustomed to eating Chinese food everyday, but it hasn’t been that difficult for me. That probably has to do with the fact that I grew up on eating Chinese food a lot when I was little, but part of it is that in sh when […]
